Why not try those small plugs? you should be able to get them in the
ground without causing any root disturbance

Have you tried sowing in compost in a length of guttering (i.e. normally
next to your roof). Then when you ready dig similar shaped 'groove'
where you want them to grow put the guttering in it then carefully slide
it out and water Tada!
