i bought some bare root seedling 6-12", were in march. ordered 50
recieved 60. following the directions of brent walston from his article on
his site, i trimmed the roots 3 inches from crown and are in 4 inch pots
with well draining soil, nothing taken off the top. they have been potted
for about a month and getting a medium amount of sun here in southern
california. they came from Penn. which im sure were sent while dormant.
Im concerned at this time only 2 trees have broken leaves. ?how long
should they take to break leafves? ?and what percentage sucess rate is
normal?

Lou

It's still a little early for them. It oftens takes longer for trees to
break buds after undergoing this root pruning process. Make sure they are
getting only morning sun or shade. When the buds open they will be
depending on a depleted root system, so you will really have to protect
them until you start to get new shoots (as opposed to simply having buds
expand to leaves).

This process does lower the number of survivors but improves greatly the
quality of the root system of the plants that do survive. Normally, I
expect around 90 to 95% of my trees to survive, but a lot depends on the
quality of the trees when you receive them. Trees can be damaged in
digging, shipping or in storage. I stopped buying trees from Eastern
companies because of these problems and now only get trees from Oregon and
Washington because these will arrive in only 2 to 3 days and don't need
fumigation.
