Looking at this picture of a yellow
bellied sapsucker, I noticed the trunk he is sitting on. It is
covered with the same type of scars that I tried to describe years
ago! Is this caused by cicadas?

I imagine the holes in that picture are caused by the woodpecker(s)

After reading the post about spotting a yellow bellied sapsucker, I
looked it up in my bird guide and did some other research. Apparently
YBS are not well liked by some people due to the damage they can do to
trees with their eating habits as the holes they bore for sap can create
a conduit for infection into the tree.
