Default Fraxinus Raywoodii [Claret Ash]

When we bought our house, some 25 years ago, I fell in love with a picture
of the Claret Ash, so we planted one in the front lawn. I knew how tall it
would grow but not that the root system would show 6-7" above ground. I
still love the tree, but would like to know if I could cover up the root
system with dirt, thus building up the lawn so that we could mow and the
roots wouldn't show.

I might be wrong, but I think it's a bad idea. Tree roots tend to die if
more soil is added on top. You could do it, and everything would look
fine, only to have the tree die slowly over the next few years.

You could try thinking of it as a feature, instead . Adds character.
