Just a guess could it be scale insects?
Can you scrap them off at all?
Do the spots yellow after a while?

I am lucky to have a couple of cattleyas in Central Europe (equiv to

and conditions in Conn. USA). Unfortunately all of them develop

My question is now, can this be a virus (affects only the cattleyas) ?
