'Stewart',
Best to spike (aerate) the lawn and treat it with a gritty compost which
you can brush into the holes with a besom. That type of treatment is a
blessing to any lawn.
Using compost on its own will tend to clog up the lawn and is not
recommended.

Recently I re-seeded a few patches on my lawn. i covered the seeds
with a
light sprinkling of B+Q multi purpose compost. the seeds germinated
great,
and the grass around the immediate area is very green and lush, and
has
remained so. Would it be a problem to lightly cover the whole lawn
with this
compost?
