SLOW DOWN! The first thing you want to do is see if you can keep your
plants alive. If your Shmpaku are in regular garden soil, you are
probably watering too much. Place a wooden or bamboo skewer in the soil
half way between the edge of the pot and the trunk. Check it every
morning to see if the dirty end is wet. If it is, do not water. Only
water when the stick comes out almost damp to dry.

It is a posibility that your plant is rootbound and that is easily
checked by taking a hold of the trunk and tap down lightly on the top
edge of the nursery pot. If you do not see roots wrapped around the
edge from top to bottom, just put it back in the pot and stop worrying!

The tree has survived this far because of you and in spite of you, ;-)
so do not try anything major until you have read a few books and or
found someone (in a Bonsai club) to guide you through the first steps in
repotting. Eventually the tree should be moved into Bonsai soil , but
you have to start the long learning curve slowly. Bonsai takes and
teaches you a lot of patience.
