Incidentally, the Retail Price Index is listed in Nix.

Assuming 1970=100

Year RPI Price in Area Aid in
1970 Pounds 1970 Pounds
1962 70 30.70 0
1972 117 30.76 0
1982 439 27.30 0
1992 749 16.95 1.86
2002 957 5.85 2.09

I'm assuming 10T/Ha yields for the Area Aid figure, and this includes
set-aside payments with the payment for wheat crops. In 1992 the
payment rates for cropped and set-aside land were different. In 2002
they are the same.

I'll just add a couple of points to this. The RPI figures are from UK
government sources, reprinted in Nix, and there have been two changes in
the index over the period, restarting with RPI=100 and revising the
basis for the calculation to reflect changes in consumer spending. So
it's a bit fuzzy at the extremes.

Second, tables elsewhere in Nix give index-linked figures for farm
income -- for roughly the same period a drop from 100 to 7, on one set
of assumptions about what Net Farm Income actually is.
