Default bromiliad plants

I got a bromiliad plant, for a decorative tropical, around my pond
(located in Illinois)
It had a beautiful red flower growing up the middle. Now it has gotten
brown, and the tips of the leaves are beginning to brown. How do I trim
it?
When I see these plants in Florida, they always seem "green" with
brilliant colored flowers.
Are mine dying? or is this just typical growth? will it flower again?

when the flower dies a new plant/s will form
from the bottom, let them grow a bit and remove
them and discard the old one (dead)

after 1 yr. of new growth put a sliver of apple
in the plants center to force another bloom and
new plants.

wierd plants...
