The shade makes it difficult to suggest an alternative climber to ivy, at
least if you want an evergreen screen. If you can plant shrubs in front of
the wall then Aucuba ( Japonica Picturata and relatives ) - Japanese
Spotted Laurel seems able to cope with shade and poor conditions.
There's also Privet and Holly, both evergreens that can cope with shade.
Otherwise I would have thought that those rolls of screening that
are available at garden centres would work; those that come in a roll
have to be supported by a wall or fence but that fits your problem. The
rolls are up to 6 feet high and I believe you can get willow/hazel, bamboo
and brushwood varieties. Moving up in price there are various types of
trellis available, of which the square trellis on a 3" pitch would give the
best screening.
You don't say how high the wall is, but 6 foot panels are certainly
available.
