I think it's more of a case where company A is a distributor for companies
B, C, D. The distributor gets a steady cash stream, while the retailers
handle sales and advertising and are usually free to set prices as they see
fit. Of course it's also entirely possible, as you (or gardenwatchdog)
say, that the distributor owns all the outlets.
