no they are the off spring of last years plants that grew to about 6
feet up

That probably answers your own question. Perhaps your original plants
were an F1 hybrid. Seed saved form these will not breed true and could
well produce a totally different colour and size depending on the
original parents, and the plant is has been crossed with.
