Hi Julie! Most people recommend cutting at the first five-leafed
cluster, but I cut anywhere below that where the cut will improve the
looks of the overall bush. I do not like my blooms above my head! (I
assume you are taling about hybrid teas, which usually grow pretty
tall, because they are usually the ones grown for cutting.) Actually,
the five-leaf set thing applies to all kinds, I guess. Also, whether
cutting for the vase or just deadheading to ensure rebloom on repeat
bloomers, you are supposed to make a slanted cut, with the low end of
the slant toward the middle of the plant, the high end pointing right
at you, if you are looking down on it. Make sense?

There are some who say that for deadheading, just snapping off the
very head of the bloom makes for better rebloom. I cannot imagine this
for hybrid teas, but can see it for shrubs and floribundas, maybe. I
do it when I don't have my felcos with me. Tell us, what are you
