Default edges of tomato plant browning and dying

I've got a tomato plant which is about 18-20" high and about 12-14"
round. It is in a 5 gallon container (22 quarts of soil, 1 cubic
foot+) The plant is sparse. I've got two others that are so bushy I
can't see into them. This one (Burpee Burger) is more bare with
smallish leaves. Since it was young (9" high), the leaves on the tips
of each branch would brown and crumble. The leaves aren't completely
destroyed for a while and eventually it slowly works inward from the
tip. The lower leaves are always worse than upper. But even the newest
full grown branches at the tops are starting to brown...at the tips.
I've gotten a few flowers but no fruit started yet.

Is this root rot?
Too wet? too dry?
Not feeding enough?
Too much sun?

Thanks.
