Default Introductory botany textbook for N. American trees

Obviously, you have never seen the book I am recommending.
It may claim to be a field guide but it is much more thorough than that.
It is exactly the type of book he is asking for.

So instead of showing your ignorance, which book do you recommend?

Please recommend a serious academic book suitable for
a retired physical scientist.

You mean like Farrar,
Trees in Canada
aka
Trees on the northern US and Canada?

PvR

That's a good one. Advice from Rinkytink, who's never been to the US.

How about Thomas S. Elias, THE COMPLETE TREES OF NORTH AMERICA.Gramercy
Publishing Co.?

Perhaps because the OP was asking for a serious academic book and not just

a
field guide?
