I've heard mixed stories about hose clamps. I wonder if there are stainless
and non-stainless made, which would explain the mixed results.

yes there are stainless run about 3-10.00=+ dependeing on size while steel runs 25 cents to 2.00+
i have both types that are in my pond for three years now and are still
operable the plain ones have outlasted a couple hoses
