why the need to sterilise pots in the first place? dont trees naturaly
grow in un sterile conditions

You must have missed the beginning of this thread in which I explain that I
am moving to New Zealand and cannot bring the trees, and pots will have to
be as "clean" as possible to avoid the import of nasties into a relatively
"bug" free country :-)
