i have a texensis grave tye beauty which is trying to grow higher than the
trellis it is threaded through. although i am pinching out the centre of
the stems, more stem keep appearing. i really don't want to prune it back
as i have yet to see it first flowering yet. does it only flower from new
growth?

Yes, new growth only, so I should leave it alone! Gravetye Beauty is a 20'
clematis but its quite happy to go up then hang down.
