I'm beginning to realise that the whole question of soil preparation
prior to sowing is more complex than I had realised.

I fear that the soil-softening substance referred to by the local
garden clearance "expert" may be BreakFree Oil, which is a specialised
cleaner for guns, believe it or not. I don't know exactly how it
affects the soil, but I think I'll be giving this one a miss.
