Default Pruning beech trees for hedging

Help....I am a complete novice when it comes to gardening. I have
quite a few beech trees which i am growing for a hedge around my
garden. The trees are about 2 years old and about 3ft tall. My
question is, how and when do i need to prune them to make them bushy
and more hedge like. Currently they are growing well but have long
bits on top. Hope this makes sense, If anyone could point me in the
right direction I would be grateful

You prune in fall after they've lost their leaves. Cut back 1/3
to 1/2 of all new growth each year.
