so my question is, is this too much light, will I constantly be battling
algae? should I take it back and get something else, or will it actually
make my fish look nicer?

IME, give up on plants if you're set on cichlids, I've seen few that they
won't eat or trash or dig up.
As for your light, no, it's not too much, a single 35 watt bulb for a 110
gallon tank is WAY too little if you're going to have plants. Minimum, you'd
need 150 total watts for any reasonable plant growth. I have 4 bulbs at 40
watts each on my 75.
