I always thought rheumatism and arthritis are the same thing.

There are at least two sorts of arthritis, and the term may be used
loosely to describe any pain in the joints.

Rheumatism includes muscular pain, and the pain in joints may or may not
be (clinically) arthritic.

A fuller differentiation would be found in a proper medical dictionary.

Googling, unfortunately, will turn up the witterings of countless quacks
and charlatans.
