Default When to replanting Orange trees

valmojado wrote in message ws.com...
I should start by stating that I actually live in Madrid, Spain. The
climate is more extreme than that in the UK with a very long and hot
Summer, short Spring and Autumn and an often cold winter (sub-zero).

My father in-law has several seed grown hardy orange trees in pots (I
think they're about one year old) and he wants to plant them out as
soon as possible.

Would it be best to do this now (the weather is currently wet and mild)
or wait until Spring?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am hesitant about advising a Spaniard about orange trees, but if no
one else is going to - i understand Madrid occasionally gets frost in
the winter. That won't worry a mature orange tree but might kill a one
year old one. Secondly you want to move a plant at a time when its
roots will grow vigorously into their new home. I would therefore wait
till April. You must then be very careful to keep the plants well
watered all next year - mature citrus can go without water but young
ones can't.

Hope this helps.
