What about sowing some sweet peas now for next year?

Apparently this is the best time to sow them for early flowers and hardy
plants next spring.

I have my fingers crossed for mine...

Or, you could probably get some basil going from seed in a pot on a sunny
windowsill even now, and they will be able to taste the leaves too.
