time to sort out the trees?

In my experience you can't get rid of laurel - even by digging down two feet
to clear the roots.
Pear is difficult too unless you grub out the roots.
But if you only want to keep it tidy - and do the work every yer - then you
should be OK. but remember it's EVERY year ...
