Are you refering to the Kelvin rating? If you are it's refering to the
color temperature of the light emitted. For freshwater you really
don't need much over 5000 IMO. The higher Kelvin ratings have
more blue/UV wavelengths. If I remember correctly 5500 is like
noon day daylight. Also the higher rated bulbs are a lot more
expensive.

50/50 is a good bulb to use. I used to use those and Triton bulbs.
One plant bulb ( for the nice color it brings out in the fish), 2
50/50 and one Triton is what I used to use when I was running
flourescent lights.
