Need a tall evergreen tree (but definitely not a Conifer) that has non
invasive roots because it will be close to a stone garden wall and will be
happy in very deep dry sandy soil on a gravel subase ..........trying to
keep the soil moist in summer even with tons of compost is a nightmare

Arbutus menziesii

I would have thought the soil was too dry, and not acid enough if the
conditions it likes are anything like A. unedus.

The silly thing grows by nature in extremely rocky sites that are
bone dry in summer. It's actually a fairly fast tree to mature --
big specimens aren't all that old, contrary to the bleatings of
some of the ignorescenti we have here.

The main thing it wants is sharp drainage, and the OP seems to
have described such a garden to a T.

It's certainly worth consideration.
