In the long run, choosing the thicker branch is better. One caveat: if
the 'better' branch is very old, remove it at the base of the plant and
go with a young one instead.
Cut lower or higher than you intended to get a good bud. On most modern
roses, you can get away with removing as little as one third or as much
as two thirds of a branch.
