That sounds irresponsible.

The plastic pieces acted in the same way as stones in soil: they helped
to retain moisture while facilitating drainage. As a side-benefit, the
compost was much lighter than soil-based ones.

Most stones don't leach out undesirable substances over time.

Most plastics don't either.
