For secateurs, what advantage(s) do anvil blades have over scissor
blades?

None - don't even think about anvil blades. You want to cut not crush. Buy
Felco, you'll never have to buy any more unless somebody steals 'em. My
preference is the classic #2 but most of the range is good including a

left
handed model.

Use the anvil type for hard wood pruning where you could damage a bypass
pair.
(The bypass blades will attempt to pass either side of the wood rather than
cut on tougher jobs,
which makes the name rather appropriate!)
The bypass type should be used for all other jobs.
Felco are good, but you will find that a cheap pair of bypass secateurs will
perform well
for many years - you can get them for as little as £1.49 in Asda!
