Default Why do chestnuts trees have sticky buds ?

In article , Mick writes

Basic question ,, why do Chestnut trees have sticky buds ,thats all

I'm sure we were told this at primary school, but I can't remember why!

I presume it's to prevent insect damage - big fat succulent buds, very
attractive to aphids.
