Keith, wrong approach. Don't offer to help. This can wound pride which
might be all your friend has left. Instead, ask (beg even) him to "teach"
you. This could give him a reason to perk up and work on his trees, you
need him! Besides, I bet he can indeed teach you things you don't even know
that you don't know ;-)
