This sounds like Rosa spinossissima pteracantha (pteracantha means
winged thorn - the thorns are huge and translucent red on new stems)

Fairly widely available from nurseries as oposed to garden centres.
Scotts of Merriott and David Austin both sell it.

I have found it under a slightly different name:
Rosa omeiensis Red Wing.
It is sold by Peter Beales (www.classicroses.co.uk).
Their description is: "Similar to 'pteracantha', but with more and brighter
red thorns and less vigour. Yellow flowers. 6'x4'
In their 2003 catalogue it cost £9.95.
Spider
