Default newbie question.... healthy rose plant, no flower

Hello,

We had planted several rose plants (bought from Home Depot,
also from a nursery)last year. Two of those plants grew
at a (more than) healthy rate. The plants always looked great;
however, those 2 rose plants NEVER flowered throught the whole
year. Do some rose plants never flower? Or something wrong
with our soil/ fertilizer we're feeding?
FYI, I am in Chicagoland area (for weather considerations).

Your comments/suggestions are appreciated...

The most likely scenario is that you purchased plants that sent out suckers
of the rootstock and the top grafted portion died. Poor quality plants,
lack of disease control, and cold winter weather all contribute to suckers.
Hybrid teas are maintainence intensive plants that need constant spraying
and a lot of winter protection.. Home Depot is also one of the worst sources
for roses unless you are really experienced and can spot the occasional
deals. You need to learn about roses that will survive in a cold climate
with the level of care you're willing to give them, like rugosas or Canadian
Explorer roses.
