I'm in Canada, and did the same thing last summer. There were lots of dead
spots in my lawn because of my dog. I raked up the spots that were dead and
matted down, then lit em up. Did a great job of getting rid of the dead
grass, without harming the living grass. Dropped some seed, topdressed, and
it filled in beautifully.

When I was in Mississippi in 1981 I drove buy this guy who was burning his
grass (not the clippings) which was a controlled grass fire. It was dry
and
the grass burned and he had a hose which was directing where the burn was
going. If I remember it was a 200 x 200 area. Is there any particular
benefit to this? I did a search but did not turn up anything. It was done
either late fall or late winter.
