om...
Why didn't anyone tell me that White Pekins grow faster than kudzu?

Two weeks ago they were tiny little fuzzballs; now they're "teenager"
ducks the size of a housecat, a nappy mixture of yellow fuzz and
starting to fletch.

Still cute as all get out. They love it when the kids pick some
spinach and drop it in their water pan. Splashing, squawking,
squabbling over the last little bites...

How long before the males start to "assert" themselves? They don't
yet have enough plumage for me to look for the curled-up tailfeathers
that I hear are an indication of them being male.

What's the male to female ratio of your little flock? I have two males to
five females. The males have gotten very protective of their girls and chase
the dogs soon as they see them in the yard. If they can't move the dogs,
they round up their girls and move them to a protected area. Sometimes they
all gang up on the dogs and descend on them, pulling hair and poking with
their bills. It's too funny!

I don't know the ratio. I bought them at a feed store and the guy
didn't know how to sex them (and I don't know either). From what I
know about Pekins, the males are little horn-dogs. I'd rather have an
all-female flock if that's the case. Just looking at the tails, I can
see that 3 look similar and one different. I don't know if that means
3 boys/1 girl or vice versa.

Glad to hear they will attack aggressors. I have a fence around the
yard and a smaller fence around the garden, but I'm still worried
about cats getting in and harassing the ducks.
