Default Green Roof and Window Boxes

I wonder what kind of soil is used for Grren Roof and Window Boxes. I
need a sort of soil which is not heavy and could be used for flower
boxes and gree roof.

For windowboxes and roof flower beds, you could use a soilless potting
medium with ingredients such as peat moss, composted bark, coco fiber,
vermiculite, sand or perlite. There are several commercial mixes such
as Gro-Mix, Metro-Mix, Pro-Mix and Fafard brands. The type of growing
medium used may be dictated by the type of plants grown. If you want
to grow cactus, you may want a sandy medium.

If you want a lawn on a roof that has to bear foot traffic, a sand
might be best to avoid compaction and mud. However, sand will need
irrigating in many climates because it holds less available water than
loam soils. Sand golf greens and athletic fields often use pure sand
as the growing medium.

There are several green roof websites:

Green roofs are much more common in Europe than in the USA. Before
installing a green roof, consult an expert to calculate if the roof
can support the weight of soil and plants.
