I believe it is currently legal to kill a grey squirrel. If you can't
do that, you can catch them in one of those rat-sized humane traps and
take them to your local council's pest control department and they will
do it. They told me their advised method was crushing the skull with
some implement. That sounds a bit hit & miss for a squirrel and could
cause suffering if you don't get it right first time, so next quickest
and not particularly painful we hear from people who it's nearly
happened to would be submerging the trap with its contents in normal
water. I wouldn't advise poison because that could produce a painful
death, and of course their poisoned bodies could be fed on by animals
you didn't wish to harm.
