And I am not keen on the descriptions I have read of the recommended way
of killing. It looks like not only could it be difficult to acheive
painlessly in the hands of an inexperienced or nervous person, but
surely if you're not quick enough the squirrel could either chew his way
out of the sack or turn and nip your fingers while you're trying to hold
it closed.

What would be better is a storage case that doubles as a chloroform
chamber, with a system of chlorform or nitrous oxide in vials that only
get broken when you close a hatch, so they're fairly safe to use. You
put the cage containing the squirrel into the case, close it and the gas
gently puts the squirrel to sleep. Then when he's asleep, you fill the
whole assembly with water, releasing an opening at arms length so you
don't get gassed; after half an hour you have a definitely dead
squirrel.
