Default Greenhouse Ivy problem

Some bright spark (close to this keyboard now!) planted an ivy outside the
greenhouse on a trellis that is on posts approx 3 inches from the glass.
The ivy was placed on the north end of the greenhouse as my idea of
protection from the cold and wind.

Of course the ivy has now broken the glass and romped away in the nice
greenhouse environment.

Luckily the greenhouse is on a thick concrete base so I need to remove the
trellis and cut down/dig out the ivy, but the problem probably wont go away
as I will only be able to get at the roots that are not under the base.

Can anyone suggest away of stopping the roots from growing out again and
getting me back to square one?

Steve
