Victoria said, "OK if you have no urgent need to communicate with the
outside world".

Speaking from experience, it isn't "great" if a teenager has just driven
straight into the phone pole outside your gate, wiped out your landline
and badly injured herself and there is no mobile signal for miles. Or
if the school can't get through to let you know your child has been
taken to hospital. Or if you use the phone for your livelihood/business
and the line is endlessly faulty, or off for days at a time.

If you have *that * urgent a need to communicate then you should not live
in an isolated place. There are many places you can live with all services
connected for most of the time.

If you lived in a really isolated place, btw, you would never switch
off your phone.

To quote Mr. Crossland " ********". I switch my phone off simply because I
want to maintain my isolation and unfortunately , too often the phone is
working when you dont want it to be.

An equally isolated neighbour a mile away might either
need urgent help, (fire, accident) or to pass on a warning of "trouble
heading your way".

Again ********. If you live the lifestyle , you take the chance. Its
part of life.
You know there was a time, not so long ago ( not the 18th century) when
most people didnt have phones. I can remember that time and I am not old. I
cant remember it ever being a problem then and it certainly aint now,
unless you make it one.

Now, I only have mains electricity here ( overhead) and it will go out
often. That can be a problem ( especially when some stupid teenager had
driven into the electric sub station and taken out all the electric cables
for miles around - and that has happened to me!).
However, if you live the lifestyle , you expect the cuts and you ahve the
equipment to deal with it.
Its called living.
