Default tree fern problems with trunk

We have a new tree fern that seems to be doing ok. Its in a corner that

gets
some light towards the end of the day but nothing too strong. Its

brought
out 5 new fronds this year and there have been no problems with them

besides
rubbing against a wall that has now been rectified.

I am most concerned about the trunk. In some of the old fronds that have
been cut off it almost looks mouldy. They also seem easy to pull off.

It has rained here (Hampshire) almost constantly for quite a few days,

so I
haven't been misting it. Any ideas?

P.S I haven't fed it yet as its new and also I fed the baby one and it

went
a bit brown so I was a little afraid to.

Don't know if this will help but it's possible the mould will turn out to

be
other plants. Ours get all sorts of other plants growing in those old

frond
spaces and its quite funny to see what will pop out next! One of ours has
got some kind of campanula growing in it, another was popping out baby
Salvias and so on. Maybe yours is playing host to another seedling.
Presumably it has a reasonable current of fresh air around it?

New things for free sounds good.

I would consider it having lots of air about it yes. Its not crowded by
things or too against a wall.
