I also gave up on roses except for climbing blazes. Those do ok with no

Do a google on "rugosa hybrid roses". They're shrub roses,
and you can't kill'em if you try. Look up F.J.Grootendorst,
Marie Bugnet (no, not Therese Bugnet), and Hansa.
