Default Alternatives To Grass For Lawn

I'm looking to lay a lawn (to replace some slate chippings) and I'm told
there are non-artificial alternatives to grass that are more hard wearing
and don't need mowing. Sounds too good to be true! Does anyone know
whether such an alternative exists, what it's called or where I can get it
from?

The lawn is to be laid in a south facing garden (less than 25% in the

shade)
with clay soil and needs to be suitable for a small child.

Thanks,

Ade.

Camomile is one, though it would need mowing maybe a couple of times.
I don't think it's hardwearing though. I've also heard of clover and yarrow
being used but you'll have to do your own research.
