Default Ant control

All the immediate neighbourhood gardens are infested every year with ants.
Apart from Nippon ant-powder (which can be unsightly and not particularly
effective) can anyone recommend a really good alternative for use on

paths,
containers/pots, lawns and flower-beds?

Mix peanut butter with boric acid and place it in foil cups. One teaspoon
boric acid to one ounce peanut butter. I have found mashing peacans with
boric acid and smearing that around to be effective as well especially in
keeping ants off the okra plants. To state the obvious one good rain
requires a good "re-smear".
