Default Sterilising garden

Good evening one and all,

I have recently sterilised a garden with sodium chlorate weed killer, which led me to believe that after application the ground would be sterilised for six months. Having applied it twice to a garden, I have now observed that grass is beginning to grow back, new weeds are appearing and what I have sprayed is generally not dying off as fast as I would of hoped.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend an effective chemical with which to sterilise the garden properly so it can be landscaped after christmas. Having gone through the rigmarole of digging repeatedly through an entire overgrown garden in order to landscape up and remove all weeds, it is an ordeal which I am really not too keen to repeat!
