I vote for possum also. I have had them live and reproduce in (under) an old
brush pile (central Austin). I didn't realize there was as much room inside
that pile as there was until they decided that my rat bait (in a shed)would
be a good food source. I was in total denial as to how the rats could be
eating so much bait (but I kept replenishing the supply). Then over a few
days, I had not only a dead parent, but two (dead) offspring which were
almost full grown!

We experience the same thing. i am pretty sure it is possum. We have a
possum that lurks about our house. I find these strewn about on a
section of the roof and below one of our oak trees.
