Hi Paulette,

Usually trapping is the best way to keep muskrats out of the pond. Their
nuisance factor is digging into the sides of the pond. (Muskrat den either in
little mounds of plant material in the pond or, more damaging, they dig dens
into the banks of the pond.) In an earthen pond they can cause damage
downstream if it is in the dam area or they will undermine the banks. In a
lined pond they will damage the liner and cause leaks.
Covering the banks of the pond with heavy rocks is one method to keep them from
digging but it is expensive and not practical for ornamental garden ponds.
Depending on where you live and your circumstances you can hire a professional
trapper. Since state laws defer it is important to know what your state allows
and what is illegal, this applies to different kinds of traps.
