Default Pump brands (submersibles)

Been doing a little research on pumps for the wifes future half barrel
garden and seem to have zeroed in on the following brands.

Danner, RIO, and Aqua Via......with the Danner pumps seeming to have
quite a lot of places that sell them. Prices on all three brands are
comarable and most have a 3 year min warranty from all three
companies.

Anyone familiar with these brands of pumps. I am leaning to perhaps a
small pump since its only for a 1/2 barrel, of something in the 250gph
range with a 1/2 or 3/4" inlet and outlet. The Danner can be run
submerged out outside, so thats a plus.

And how about filters.........yea or neigh! Submersible or external
type? Was origianlly leaned towards a submersible type but
considering the space you have to work with inside a barrel half a
filter and pump will easily eat up a lot of valuable space........so
now am considering an external.

Any suggestions as to filters submerged or not, and pumps?

Picked up a cast iron decorative pitcher pump from Big Lots on
closeout for $5.00...........its about 20" high, and looks just like a
real old fashioned hand pump. In the process of machining out a cavity
within this pumps body to allow me to run a piece of flexible PVC
tube up inside for the water passage way. The opriginal configuration
of the pump had no opening at all for water flow as it was never
intended to be used as a fountain, so it was made in the spout and
head area solid. Hardest thing is access inside the spout due to its
angle, but I'm getting there, (I think!)
If not I'll use the pump as a pattern and mold me one up and cast it
out of aluminum.
