you want to be aware of the direction the fan grows in so that they
can be aligned rather than willy nilly.

Yeah, but aren't they going to grow regardless? In my experience,
Irises are like weeds - they'll try to propogate no matter where you
put them. My wife threw a bunch of 'em away down by the burn pile last
fall, and this spring I went down there to burn some stuff, and lo and
behold, they were sproutin' new foliage. I put 'em in the ground and
they're going great. Makes you wonder whether there might be irises on
Mars.
